Some shoots start with a location. This one started with a colour.
When Lorraine and I began planning this editorial, we wanted something bold and different from my usual moody, cinematic work — something with energy. The answer was waiting at KTC Howard Park in Kilmarnock: a bright blue pickleball court that turned her red jersey into the loudest thing in the frame.
The Concept
The idea was simple: red on blue. The red belonged to her — jersey, sunglasses, nails — and the court supplied an entire canvas of blue. Two complementary colours that make each other louder, sharp lines from the court markings, a skateboard, and a confident, athletic mood. Editorial fashion meets street sport.
How I Shot It
I used a wide zoom for the environmental frames to capture the full scale of the court, then switched to a portrait prime for tighter shots with that creamy background compression.
The court's blue surface bounced a cool cast into every shadow, so the challenge was the opposite of what you'd expect: keeping her skin tones warm and clean against all that blue. I exposed carefully for the highlights and added a touch of off-camera flash fill on the tighter shots to lift her out of the colour.
The Edit
In post, I built a custom preset for this series — deep, rich blues, punchy saturated reds, controlled highlights, and a slightly filmic contrast curve to give it that sports-magazine editorial feel.
